Wollombi is the picturesque historic centre of the Lower Hunter Valley. It is easily accessible from Newcastle, Sydney and the Upper Hunter.

From Sydney via Newcastle Expressway:

Take the Newcastle Freeway, starting at Wahroonga in the northern suburbs of Sydney. Continue on the Freeway to the Calga Interchange. Take the exit to Wollombi. At Bucketty you will travel along sections of the famous Great North Road, which was constructed by convict gangs in the early days of European Settlement. The road crosses a number of convict built bridges and calverts, a reminder of the days when a trip to the Wollombi was a long and arduous journey.

From Sydney via the Putty Road:

Alternatively, you can visit Wollombi from Sydney via the Putty Road. This route was built as an alternative to the Great North Road as a route from the settlement of Windsor on the Hawksbury River. This route will take you through Wollombi National Park and is a popular drive from Sydney’s Western suburbs. While on the Putty Road, look for Milbrodale Road near Bulga – it’s a turnoff that’s easily missed. This heads in an easterly direction to Broke. Once in Broke, turn south and head along the banks of the Wollombi Brook into Wollombi.

From Newcastle:

Venture West on the New England Highway, taking the exit to Cessnock. While in Cessnock, pop into the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery. Continue along Wollombi Road to Wollombi.

From the Upper Hunter:

From Scone, take the New England Highway in a southerly direction.  Continue through Muswellbrook on to Singleton. After crossing the Hunter River, turn right onto Campbell St and then left onto John St. Enjoy Singleton’s historic centre and consider stopping for a quick coffee. Continue on John St until it become Glenridding Rd and eventually the Putty Rd. Turn left onto Paynes Crossing Rd and continue to Broke. Once in Broke, turn south and follow the banks of the Wollombi Brook until you reach Wollombi.
